How to Activate your Sourdough Starter

To activate your sourdough starter, follow these simple steps:

  1. Begin by adding 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and 1 tablespoon of room temperature water to into your pint-sized glass jar. Stir the mixture thoroughly with wooden stir-stick.
  2. Cover the jar with your included, breathable material and secure with the screw-top lid or a rubber band. Store it in a warm place like a countertop for 12-24 hours.
  3. After this initial period, feed the starter with an additional 2 tablespoons of flour and 2 tablespoons of water, stirring thoroughly. The consistency should resemble pancake batter.
  4. After 12-24 hours, feed the starter with an additional 1/4 cup of flour and 1/4 cup of water. Stir thoroughly.
  5. After 12-24 hours, discard down to 1/4 cup starter and then feed the starter with 1/4 cup flour and 1/4 cup water. Stir thoroughly.
Repeat the feeding process every 12-24 hours, gradually increasing the amount of flour and water as noted above. Once it bubbles and doubles in size after four hours, this signifies that your starter is activated and ready to use! This usually takes between 5-14 days. Once activated, use the discard for any of the recipes on the blog!
